In 1900 Andrew S. Reid and Robert Reid founded the Reid Brothers Co. in Beverly, MA to serve the local shoemaking industry. They built the first Reid surface grinder in 1914 to meet the demand for precision production as a result of the impending rise of WWI. Then, in the late 1930's and early 1940's, the demand for grinders again exploded for WWII war production. The request for orders exceeded the Reid's plant capacity in 1967 so production was contracted to Fayscott Co. Eventually, the assets and rights of the Reid Surface Grinder Line was purchased by Leland-Gifford Inc. in December, 2003. Due to increasing manufacturing costs and a decrease in sales, manufacturing of the Reid Surface Grinders was eventually discontinued.
The Reid Surface Grinders line consists of manual and hydraulic surface grinders. Although manufacturing of these grinders was stopped a few years ago, Leland-Gifford continues to support the Reid Product line and keeps most of the repair parts for used machines are kept in stock.
